Bird Feeding
Feeding birds contributes to the overall success and longevity of wild birds in Britain. But it is important to remember some simple rules when providing wild bird feed to help attract kaleidoscope species.
• It is important that once wild birds are fed, they will continue throughout the year as wild birds begin to see your garden as a hot spot of nutrients.
• According to BTO, experts on all the fun things, feeding birds during the cold months is a priority because wild birds will need to stay plump to ensure survival.
• Birds tend to feed them early in the morning or late in the afternoon, especially during winter, so it is important to check for bird feed during these times.
• Of course, supplemental nutrition is recommended throughout the year, especially during the breeding season at the beginning of spring, when the parents are searching to find feed for their young incubation as well as themselves.
Nutrients or bird tables
The nutrient type or the way wild birds feed tends to determine which species they will attract. The use of standard mixed bird feed on the bird table or on the ground will attract many of the most common wild bird species. Feeders will tend to attract small birds that can cling either to the outer mesh or perch. In addition, to attract a wider range of wild birds, you can begin to provide specialized nutrients such as the Nigger Feders that are designed to carry small Negro seed, a special favorite with the birds.
Get close to wild birds as they feed using a feeder window. Available in many different species, they are ideal for identifying species and viewing individual personality traits.
Whatever feeding method you choose, whether it is floor, table or feeder, it is important to remember that cleanliness is of utmost importance. Ideally, nutrients must be cleaned each time we mobilize to prevent accumulation of bacteria that can cause the spread of the disease among our wild birds. Check our guide Keeping it Clean for advice on how to clean your feeders. To help prevent this from happening, a number of nutrients are available, including our heavy feeders (Swuggel Top) and BTO Heavy-Duty Feeders, which feature a FeedSafe ™ biofeedback layer that kills bacteria when touched. It is also important to provide clean and fresh water throughout the year. Ice Free for Bird Baths can be purchased to stop water in the bird baths during the winter.
What to feed, when?
Winter is the hardest time for our wild birds as a need to find food when nature's stock is at its lowest, along with long cool nights and short days to search for food. During this season, high-calorie wild birds, such as snack balls, lumps, or semi-wet treatments, feed wild bird seeds mixed with sub-humid grease pellets, a common addition and make the best supplements in the winter. You can buy fat balls with or without nets. If you choose to use snack balls, it is necessary to observe birds at all times where their claws can become tangled in nylon. If this is not practical, we recommend using unsaturated fat balls inside the fat ball holder each time!
During the winter, the demand for feeding devices can seem endless. However, there are some simple tricks and cheap alternatives that you can offer along with regular bird seeds and fat snacks.
• Combine your usual wild bird seeds with less expensive fillings such as granules, peanut granules, uncooked oats, currants or dried worms. In addition, this protein will add much needed carbohydrates to their diets.
• Serve your leftover food such as dried fruit, raw bacon cream, grated hard cheese or remaining fruit such as apples, peaches, pears, powdered or soaked biscuits and minced residue on the bottom of the grain box. Avoid any cooked meat or fat because it can clog the feathers and never give milk as birds can not digest it.
• Think over the long term and make your garden a sanctuary for wild birds and wildlife alike by planting plants, trees and shrubs that are friendly to birds, which will provide a feast of berries, fruits and seeds.
• Purchase in bulk. The more wild birds you buy, the more valuable your savings will be. In addition, Wild Bird Feed bags weighing more than 12 kg are free VAT in the UK.
Any nutrition?
With so many available feeds, it may be difficult to know which ones to offer. Here is our simple guide to feeding wild and most basic wild birds.
Wild Bird Seed mixes
Probably the most common and easy to view, there are hundreds of wild bird species that mixes and seeds directly to choose from. The key is to find out which species you want to attract or own in your area, and how you want to submit your feed.
The use of a basic seed mix attracts a wide variety of common species, such as the special Wild Bird blend or the All Seasons mix, full of seed and grain-rich food, is a great start. These types of loose seed mixtures and other fillings (see above) can be combined into large quantities and can be provided either in the seed feed unit or in a bird or in the ground.
To try more varieties, you can start including specialty feeds that appeal to one's own preferences or are welcome at the time of year. For example, the free-flowing feeding feast, as the name implies, is a luxurious blend of high-quality, energy-rich ingredients and is especially favored with fruits, Siskins and Greenfinches.
It is also important to take into account the needs of wild birds that you would like to attract to your garden. The Robins, Thrushes and Blackbirds are ground feeders, so it is important to provide an alternative feeding site for these species and suitable feeders. Our best seller is the Goldenascrist combination. This combination is suitable for nutrients, bird tables or land. It is not only nutritious, it is free of crust, which means that there is no waste and much less risk than the unwanted plants that grow in your garden.

Seeds straight
The straight seeds range from peanuts to sultan and bogina to niger seeds. Each has its own characteristics that benefit from our wild bird diet.
Peanut is probably the most common feed to buy. Rich in oil, peanuts are a high-energy food source and are favored by a variety of species including woodpecker and nut. It is important to remember that if you want to make peanuts, they should be contained in a wire container, as they may be hazardous to small or small birds. Peanut or peanut powder is a good substitute for peanuts and is completely safe to feed in the nutrients, on the ground or on the bird table alone or mixed with other feeds. To help attract woodpecks and nuts to your garden, why not try to push peanuts into natural angles or dig holes in old tree trunks or fallen branches. Avoid salted peanuts when offering these options to wild birds in your garden.
Bogena Softbill Food is a full-quality feed of fruit and love that grows on a rich and wet mixture. They accumulate with proteins, carbohydrates, fats, dried seeds, berries and insects that can be fed alone with another mix created for soft boxes such as Songbird Delight or Goldensong.

Sunflower seeds are usually the first choice for wild birds, since they do not contain an outer layer or peel for peeling, making them an easy meal. Because it is the absolute straight food, it is at the top of the list to combine nutritional value and high energy content with ease of nutrition and versatility. Provide it in the feeder either on its own or mixed with another feed, on the floor or on a table.
Great value, all year round, are black sunflower seeds. Our black sunflower seeds have thin outer scales for easy access to nutrient-rich intestines. Very popular with a wide variety of species, they are ideal mixed with other feed or safe to make on their own.
Mealworms and WaxwormsPacked full of protein and moisture, soft meal worms, jellyfish and waxworms are a great addition to promoting wild bird diets. Especially useful during winter when worms, snails, molluscs and other insects are introduced.
Live MealwormsMealworms are the most popular living food used in Britain for bird garden. The flour beetle larvae are a good source of protein and fat. Great for attracting a group of wild birds including Robbins and Bull, they can be fed all year round, but especially in the spring when the mother birds are looking to feed their young. Store them in a cool, dry place like a garage, shed or even a fridge! They can be served in ground feeders or on a table for birds. Getting some extra mealworm food live to help keep them fresh for longer is always handy.
Live WaxwormsWaxworms (Galleria melonella) are the larvae of the big wax moth and get their name as they are most commonly used in beeswax honey. Their soft body is easy to digest and very nutritious. It is rich in protein, moisture and fat, making it a more juicy meal. Full of protein to help birds during the winter months, especially when worms, snails, molluscs and other insects are few.
Dried MealwormsLive feeds feed on protein, but for those who are sensitive when thinking about dealing with these criminals, a great alternative is dried worms. Remember to soak the dried meal worms in the water before serving them outside the feeder as they tend to fly away, in addition to helping to increase the bird's moisturization. You could even larger than your usual nutritious seed with dried mealworms for more variety and nutrients for your feather friends. It is important to get rid of any good colored worms you may find because they may carry some diseases such as salmonella.
